‘It was a challenge for me to be in the company of a great lyricist. ‘We had long conversations about each song before we wrote it,’ says Marley. I gotta write everything down, or I’ll forget it!’ But when I listen to him coming up with ideas for a single song, I can hear about five other songs. ‘We started rehearsing together,’ says Nas, ‘jamming with his musicians in Miami. In 2008, the two met to discuss a collaboration. In 2005 Nas guested on Marley’s Grammy-winning breakthrough album Welcome To Jamrock. I’ve always liked him and I loved his very clever, very crafty rhymes.’ ‘We were sharing the bill with lots of hip hop bands, including The Roots and Busta Rhymes ,’ says Marley. Distant Relatives is a collaborative studio album by American rapper Nas and Jamaican reggae artist Damian Marley, released May 18, on Universal Republic and Def Jam Recordings.The pair first met way back in 1996, while Marley was on tour with The Melody Makers, a reggae act featuring several of Bob Marley ’s children, including Ziggy and Stephen.
